Jesus was “Wounded in the house of his friends”. The indignity of the crucifixion reaches far beyond the violence and brutality. It is insult added to injury. The perpetrators of the act were the ones he was trying to rescue. Why refer back to what happened in another age in a culture strange to us today?Because we are the ones whom Jesus came for. We are in addition to them.In the culture we live in Jesus is often marginalized. Jesus is relegated as irrelevant and unneeded because of the trappings of the “Christian religion”.An untold number of people have surveyed the Christian faith and have decided that it is out of reach for them. Or that, “its ok for others but it seems irrelevant to my life”. Maybe there are even people here today that have just decided that the expectations that are heaped upon people who aspire to the Christian faith are to high. “I can’t live that kind of life”. The bar is too high to do it the way it should be done. While having disdain for hypocrisy they decide rather than being hypocritical they’ll just forgo any attempt since they are bound to fail.
