Our largest identity is described in Sanskrit as Sakshi, the “witness” or “Supreme Being” who is beyond time and space. In yoga we would describe The Witness as “the face behind the face”, a way to be with thoughts or ego rather than believing them. In this way we can noticing the “face” without judgment. Our ability to metacognate as The Witness makes it possible to integrate ego, persona, shadow and our smaller personal identity.
