Synopsis of Recitatif:
"Recitatif" is a story designed to obscure racial lines, as the race of the two main characters, Twyla and Roberta is debatable. Separated by class, the characters encounter each other through the decades facing social conflicts that reshape their friendship. Morrison has described the story as "the removal of all racial codes from a narrative about two characters of different races for whom racial identity is crucial."
