WOES wk4: Cutting Costs and Counting Costs

Scripture: Matthew 23:16-22

The Pharisees were in charge of a religious system where you could to break your word and betray one another when it suited you, without any consequences. They offered “believers” a way to live how you want; a religion that makes almost no demands of you in terms of you beliefs, character, or behaviour. This is consumerism, and for the Pharisees it’s the problem beneath the problem, making them “blind”.

Consumerism tries to cut the costs of discipleship, while Jesus tells us to count the costs. And so in our day, consumer Christianity may be the single biggest threat to Christians and churches in our culture, and we need a solution that’s counter-cultural. In this message we propose an ancient strategy that’ll keep consumerism in check.
