Hello sexy sisters and welcome back to the Sexyfit Podcast!
I have a very special guest for you today, someone who went through an amazing transformation in the last 18 months.
Izabela and I met in August 2014 when I saw her at a body building show here in San Diego. She stood out to me, she was amazing on stage and shortly after we started a coaching relationship. But there are other things that come with competing and that’s what we discussed in this interview.
I want you to tune in and see if you are making some of the lifestyle mistakes that she was making in your life right now. It's scary how easy these are too miss.
Why did you originally start competing and working out?
My background is quite specific. I come from Poland and I was a cardiopulmonary scientist, doing my scientific job for 14-18 hours a day. I didn’t eat properly, I would have milk shakes, Kit-Kat and was addicted to Red Bull. I burned myself psychologically, emotionally and physically, and ended up having a heart attack at 31.
That was a big, brutal eye opening moment for me. I told myself that no way I was not going to be in bed again and maybe have another heart attack at the age of 34. So I hired a nutritionist right away and shortly after I signed up for the gym.
I slowly fell in love with the physique of the girls around me and started admiring athletic body. I asked my trainer if I could compete. He changed my program and my nutritionist changed my meal plan. It took me 10 months to change my body from an anorexic, soft looking girl to a body building figure.
However, competing wasn’t healthy at all. I was on the same meal plan for 18 weeks. Eventually I couldn’t sleep, had no energy, I could barely walk and didn’t know what these symptoms were, but something was definitely off. Being a scientist, I read a bit about it and soon I found you on Facebook. We connected and I learned that I had adrenal fatigue. You helped me recover and put me back on the normal metabolic rate.
What did you learn on your journey of us working together and where are you now?
The biggest lesson was a huge mindset shift. I put on some weight and I was feeling ugly having 5% of body fat higher than I had before. It was hard to overcome a huge mindset obstacle related to body image. But I understood why I needed to eat proper food in order to recover. It took us 6-8 months to change my metabolism.
Now I’m in love with food as the primary source of our energy and the natural path of fueling our bodies. Macro-nutrient based approach helped me get rid of anemia and migraine. I don’t drink coffee any more, but anyway I go and kill it in the gym, I smile and have energy.
My life changed a lot in the last 1.5 years. I’m not competing but I love body building. I don’t need to compete to look healthy, sexy and fit. I also fell in love with obstacle races and challenging my body and I recently I ran Spartan race.
What advice would you give to your pre body building self?
I would ask myself why I didn’t make those changes earlier. Why I wasted 10 or 15 years pleasing others instead of asking myself what made ME happy. I would rush my younger self to make the changes faster and be more committed.
You’re moving into a full time coaching now. As a fitness coach could you give our audience advice on what they can do to improve their health and fitness and where to start from?
In terms of training, whether you are a little overweight or looking anorexic don’t compare yourself to anybody around you. Because even the fittest person you see was one time in your spot. Just move on and do it, don’t wait and start with small steps.
The other advice is related to mindset. Once you know you want to make a change, don’t sit on it. If you are thinking and doubting yourself, you’re not committed and you don’t really want to do it. But if you really want to make the change, you will do it right away.
Izabela reflects how fitness is truly a journey to transformation. I love her story and it reminds us that there’s never going to be a perfect time because the time is right now. Remember that and talk soon sisters!
With love,
Zlata
