The number of female prisoners in New Zealand is increasing at a rate three times that of male prisoners.
The women's prison population has grown 50 percent in the last five years.
Auckland University sociologist Professor Tracey McIntosh told Mike Hosking there's a disproportionate number of Maori women in the system - many who have suffered trauma.
"Stats given by a corrections study show about 52 percent have post-traumatic stress syndrome particularly in terms of sexual violence and victimisation."
