Niki Lake of our city's Discovery Center is our guest on Wonderful World, KZSM's monthly radio show about river and aquifer issues, this Tuesday April 8 at 11:30 a.m. The Discovery Center, where many very successful educational nature programs happen year round, is on Riverside Drive across from Herbert's Taco Hut. A hugely attended native plant sale just occurred there this past weekend benefitting the Center. A birding event is scheduled in May and the city is now celebrating being designated a Bird City. We will discuss details about all this, and all the work that led up to this celebratory announcement, including local birding walks, brochures, newspaper columns, state birding trail maps and more in the past 40 years. Listen in Tuesday morning for a fast paced half hour by tuning in at 11:30 a.m. to FM 104.1, or listen online by going to KZSM.org and clicking on Listen Now.  

A LIVE musical score is being played at Spring Lake to go with the screening of "Yakona", scheduled for March 22. so Wonderful World will have Anlo Sepulveda as our guest, one of the two producers of the film to tell us all about it. This film and its beautiful musical score was a collaborative effort of so many locals, and has won many awards. What is happening to our river's flow? What can we do to help?

This coming Tuesday morning, December 10th, the Wonderful World Show on KZSM 104.1 FM, Hosted by Dianne Wassenich, which covers river and aquifer issues, will have Emily Lorkovic of the Meadows Center as our guest. She is with the Ecological ResearchTeam there, working on the native aquatic plant restoration in the river and Spring Lake, plus other efforts with volunteers to remove thousands of golf balls in the lake. This team is making huge strides in helping repair decades of invasive plants being allowed to run wild---and it is very hard work. Listen Tuesday and learn all the reasons why to do it, the problems they have encountered, and their terrific successes in establishing native aquatic plants like wild rice and others. Host Diane Wassenich welcomes local environmental lawyer Robert Levinski to have a discussion about the upcoming Hays County road bonds impact on the Edwards Aquifer and the need to wait and give more time or proper public input.

Guest host Jon Cradit, President of the San Marcos Greenbelt Association, His guest is Dr. Julian Jason about a newly published paper from Texas State University mapping out trails used by wildlife to navigate through urban areas, and how these help to preserve river recharge areas.

Host Diane Wassenich dives into the rigors of the Texas Water Safari, what they call the "Worlds Toughest Canoe Race", with 13 time participant Nate Tart. Nate is the director of the Texas Canoe and Kayak Racing Association. He talks about the preparation, the stress, heat, and the effects of sleep deprivation on the participants in this grueling marathon.
