Working through unprecedented times... again

Listen Later

The “unprecedented times” really don’t stop, do they?

Does anyone else find it jarring how little major traumatic events are even acknowledged in our 9-5 dealings?

Like, we’re all just disassociating from the persistent terror that our country could spontaneously combust at any second.

School shootings, political violence, police brutality, class conflict, funding a genocide with our tax dollars, and bigotry of every variety… all part of what passes for normal for us.

How many of us have dissociated as a survival instinct because living in reality and being able to function at a high level at work are in conflict with one another?

How many of us treat researching the viability of emigrating to greener pastures as some sort of weird hobby, or almost like it’s a side hustle?

If any of this sounds familiar, just know that you’re not alone.

It’s OK to not be OK.

If putting on a happy face from 9-5 in the interest of increasing shareholder value and keeping capitalism humming along makes you scream inside, I get it.

You’re not weird, broken, or weak, and you’re definitely not alone.

I know there are people suffering in silence right now and gutting it out to get through the day.

I don’t have all the answers, but I know being true to yourself and talking about what’s on your mind can help.

Bring your whole self to work. Fears included.

The more we talk about these things, the more we’re able to enact changes to the workplace that don’t involve disassociating all day to the point of being exhausted all night.
