About Michelle E. Dickinson: Michelle E. Dickinson is a passionate mental health advocate, a TED speaker, and a published author of a memoir entitled Breaking Into My Life. After years of playing the role of child caregiver to her bipolar mother, embarked on her own healing journey of self-discovery.
She also knows first-hand what it feels like to struggle with a mental illness after experiencing her own depression due to her divorce. She had to spend years working to eradicate the mental health stigma within her own workplace by elevating empathy and compassion, causing more conversations, and leading change around mental illness on the site.
In this episode Adam and Michelle discuss:
Normalizing the conversation about mental health in the workplace
Medication vs meditation
The effectiveness of one on one coaching with teachers
Making self-care a non-negotiable
Key Takeaways:
Let's normalize the narrative about mental health in the workplace. Even if companies offer benefits and resources, if stigma still prevails, there will still be people who remain silent and don't reach out to get the help they need.
You cannot solve all problems with medication. Start focusing on your physical health and silence the noise inside your head through meditation.
One-on-one resilience coaching helps teachers develop good healthy habits, which will allow them to feel good, bring good energy to the classroom, and even teach their own children to follow suit.
Self-preservation and self-care should not be an option. Life is short, so find out what makes you feel great and do more of it.
“It's amazing when you can start to just take a step back and observe, be the observer of your thoughts, then you can then create some real change.” - Michelle E. Dickinson
