World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides.
In N.Z. the annual provisional suicide statistics released by the Chief Coroner in August 2020 showed the provisional suicide rate was at its lowest in three years.
For the year to 30 June 2020, 654 people died by suicide, compared to 685 in 2019 – a decrease of 31 deaths
The provisional suspected self-inflicted death statistics for the 2020/2021 period are expected to be released in late September.
We’re joined now by Leilani Fina’i Clarke, Senior manager suicide prevention - Pacific at Le Va, joins us now on #PacificDays. Leilani currently leads the FLO Talanoa suicide prevention education programme that aims to equip Pasifika families and communities with the right tools and information to prevent suicide.
