The Washington Report

WQXR's The Washington Report

Listen Later

David Sanger, chief Washington correspondent for The New York Times, joins guest host Brian Zumhagen to discuss the aftermath of Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan. Three nuclear reactors in the region were destabilized by the tsunami. As a result, reactor operators have been forced to flood them with seawater to keep them cool and to avoid meltdowns. Sanger explains the process, why it is necessary, and what we can expect looking forward. A Times reporter and bureau chief in Tokyo for six years, he also discusses the resilience of the Japanese people and the Japanese government's strategy during disaster situations.
