It's always good etiquette to say 'thanks'.  Here, Paul says 'thanks' to a church for the support they'd sent him during a lean time.  At the same time, he tells them he's leaned a valuable secret, viz, how to get along with whatever he has.  What is 'the secret of being content in any and every situation'?  This sounds like precisely what's needed in a consumer-oriented culture.
