Your car can park itself, change lanes, and manage highway traffic. But does that actually make driving easier?
Sometimes the technology designed to simplify driving turns familiar tasks into a series of menus, confirmations, alerts, and awkward maneuvers.
In this episode of Wrenched. Then Driven., we're talking about the difference between automation and convenience. From automatic parallel parking to highway driving assistance, modern cars are increasingly capable of doing things we've spent years learning to do ourselves.
The problem isn't necessarily that these systems don't work. It's that using them can sometimes require more attention and effort than simply doing the task yourself.
Good technology should make driving easier, not turn the driver into a supervisor.
Wrenched. Then Driven. is the audio companion to Wrench & Reason, exploring modern cars, driving technology, and the way we actually experience them.

Modern cars are watching more of what we do behind the wheel than ever before. The problem is that they can usually see what we did without always understanding why we did it.
Move over to avoid debris and lane keeping may push back. Get close to another vehicle you’ve already seen and the collision warning may light up. Look toward something important at the side of the road and the driver-monitoring system may decide you aren’t paying attention.
Most of the time, those interventions are annoying.
But every once in a while, the same system may catch the mistake you really did make.
So how much unnecessary intervention are we willing to tolerate for the one time the car actually saves us?

Modern cars are capable of far more than most of us ever ask from them.
Performance cars can do speeds we’ll never legally use. Trucks can tow far more than many owners regularly need. EVs carry enough range for trips most days never require. Three-row SUVs often spend most of their lives with empty seats.
And yet we keep paying for all of that extra capability.
So is it actually wasted?

You bought the car. But does that mean you own everything it can do?
Modern cars increasingly depend on subscriptions for features that once simply came with the vehicle. Some of that makes sense: cellular data, live traffic, continuously updated maps, cloud services and evolving driver-assistance systems all cost money to maintain.
But the distinction gets murkier when the hardware is already sitting in your car.
A recent experience with a one-year-old Ford Explorer got me thinking about where the service ends and the car begins—and what ownership means when a perfectly functional vehicle can lose capabilities simply because access expired.

Adaptive cruise control is supposed to make traffic easier. But when the car leaves a consistent following gap, other drivers often treat it like an invitation—and every cut-in forces the system to create another gap.
In this episode, I look at why adaptive cruise can feel less capable than a human driver in heavy traffic, why computers are better at measuring distance than reading intent, and why consistency isn’t always the same thing as predictability.
Your car knows how big the gap is. You know why somebody wants it.

Driving at night in the rain can sometimes feel almost impossible. There may be plenty of light around you, but the lane markings, pavement markings, and even parts of the road itself can seem to disappear.
The problem isn't always that you need more light. Sometimes you need better contrast.

When people compare electric vehicles, the first numbers they usually look at are range and battery size. Those numbers are easy to understand and easy to compare.
But 30 miles of range doesn’t always mean the same thing.
Once you decide you’re buying an EV, the spec sheet starts to work a little differently. Two electric vehicles can advertise very similar range while achieving that number in completely different ways. One may rely on a massive battery pack, while another gets there through efficiency.

EV charging still matters. It just may not deserve as much of your attention as it used to.
After driving a Genesis Electrified G80 and a Porsche Macan Electric back to back, I noticed something had changed. I was thinking about ride, steering, responsiveness, comfort, usability and whether I actually liked the cars.
I wasn’t thinking very much about charging.

Modern cars are remarkably good at going fast. They're quieter, more stable and more capable than ever, and EVs take that even further by removing many of the sensations we traditionally associate with speed.
But if our cars have changed this much, why haven't our speed limits?

Modern cars don’t just help drivers back up anymore. They increasingly shape how drivers perceive space itself.
Backup cameras, surround-view systems, parking sensors, digital rearview mirrors, and trajectory overlays have fundamentally changed what drivers look at, how they judge distance, and what feels normal behind the wheel.
