What is the place of the law in the life of the Christian? Many Christians observe a legalistic form of Christianity, where the emphasis is on the rules that we must follow to be a 'good' Christian. Is it something that we should be struggling to obey? Is it something we can obey? Or should we be focussing somewhere else? That is the key issue in Romans 7.

Introduction: Legalistic Christianity
Context
1. We are no longer under the law (1–6)
2. Objection 1: Is the law sin? (7–12)
a. The law educates us about sin (7)
b. The law arouses us to sin (8-9)
c. The law results in death (10-12)
3. Objection 2: Is the law at fault? (13–25)
a. Sin is responsible (13)
b. Sin enslaves us (14-23)
c. Who is the “I”?
d. Deliverance – past, present & future (24, cf. Chapter 8)
e. Conclusion (25)
Implications
a. The futility of legalism
b. The solution is Christ & his Spirit
c. Flee legalism & return to the gospel
