Write music quicker: Set yourself limitations

Listen Later

Limiting what you do when creating can leave you feeling liberated… weird right? I’ll tell you why…

We often feel overwhelmed by all the choices we have, and if you’re in the music making game, you know there’s a lot of them. To increase productivity and make yourself a prolific writer, we can harness the power of restriction. It forces you to make a decision, it allows you to get stuff done at a faster pace, you are no longer considering what sounds to use in your production, you’ve already chosen them! It also encourages you to think outside the box with how to use instruments in a different way. A couple of rules which I encourage you should start out with:

  1. Set a target number of instruments. 3-4 is great.
  2. Use one chord pattern for the whole (You can rely on the top-line to make each section sound different.)
  3. Now the rules are set, start creating… and to help you with differentiation between each section, here are 3 things I personally like to do:

    1. Change the voicing of a chord
    2. Use FX and automation to breathe life and alter the timbre
    3. Make the most of velocities, especially on things like piano or guitar, play them softer and harder for a dynamically interesting song.
    4. Theres also a million other things you could do, but these are a great starting point.

      Now go create!
