Tony M You've Been Gone Too Long
This is one series where I always look forwards to the next instalment. The mixture of strong characters, police procedural and elements of the supernatural all infused with Ian Hanmore'ssmooth as velvet narrationare allingredients for a fine audiobook experience. Another odd case confronts Inspector McLean with a body appearing to have been dropped from a great height making for a tough assignment.
After the dizzying heights and dramatic crescendo that Oswald achieved in the previous instalment "The Damage Done" it was always going to bea tough act to followand I think it has proved that way. Much of this book felt a just a little more staid and ordinary than the previous ones until the concluding hours of the book. Most of theit feels like the characters being given a much deserved break from theirearlier physical and metaphysical exertions. Personally I luxuriatedhappily listening to the purring Hanmore and enjoying the characters as much as the story even if the ending and the way the mystery of the original crime was resolved was alittle unimpressive to my ears.
I see some reviews on Amazon are strongly hinting that this book could be taken as a stand-alone novel. I suppose that it could be and still be enjoyed but this series isso good that I would urge anyone considering that to instead start from the beginning. The back story of the characters and the premise of the series are so strong that this one is well worth investing in.
So not the best of the series but still enough for me to feel that I have had my McLean fix for the year!
Bravo
I counted the days, excited about the release of James Oswalds latest book. I was not disappointed only sorry that I have finished it. It was full of twists and turns keeping me absorbed and guessing throughout the whole book. I feel I know the character's each with their own individual personalities. James Oswald can write his books without acts of brutal violence, blood and gore that can be quite horrific to read/listen to. Also, although there is some cursing, it is appropriate within the character and not just endless bad language that is totally unnecessary. Ian Hanmore was again faultless in his narration. Roll on the next book.
never disappoints me
