Following Hulk Hogan's legendary match with The Rock at Wrestlemania 18, WWE were eager to cash in on the apparent revival of Hulkamania, and rushed him into the main event of WWE Backlash 2002, against Undisputed Champion, Triple H. Also on this show, Steve Austin faces The Undertaker with Ric Flair acting as a Special referee as the two men fought over who would be named the number 1 contender to the title, Kurt Angle took on Edge, Brock Lesnar had his first ever televised match, against Jeff Hardy, and Rob Van Dam defended the Intercontinental Title against Eddie Guerrero.
