Jack Coe earned a doctorate in music at Indiana before he retired and began working in history. He was cataloging John Crommelin’s personal papers for the Naval Aviation Museum when he decided he had enough material for a book. I interviewed jack about his new book on the WWII hero with a sordid past, Crommelin.
2:25 – Jack first got a doctorate in music at Indiana. After retirement, he worked for the University of Wisconsin and he began cataloging Navy historical documents and he eventually cataloged a huge amount of material related to John Crommelin and so wrote on him.
6:55 – The book starts with Crommelin’s career in WWII so it’s not a biography. It’s focused on Crommelin’s own collected materials. Crommelin was an inspirational Naval officer on the USS Enterprise but was also a white supremacist who was very vocal about his attitudes after the war.
11:30 – Crommelin was resentful towards the US Naval Academy Green Bowl Society.
16:25 – His decline begins when he starts to release classified information publicly to protest Navy activities which bothered him.
21:40 – After retirement, he ran for office 11 times on an anti-Semitic and white supremacist political platform.
24:06 – Jack used Congressional records, textbooks, articles and other documents in addition to Crommelin’s personal papers. Some of the book discusses the growth of the Klan and how Crommelin was part of that. The KKK had a significant influence on the USNA in the 1920s and 1930s.
29:59 – Crommelin had trained in fighter planes before the war.
31:30 – The Enterprise had a lot of good Naval aviators on board with Crommelin. Late in his life, Crommelin took undue credit for the thatch weave air-fighting tactic.
37:03 – Crommelin was open about his membership in the Klan.
41:49 – One of his brothers became an Admiral and distanced himself from John Crommelin.
47:32 – Crommelin mentored George Lincoln Rockwell who founded the American Nazi party.
50:05 – There was some resistance to publishing the book because of the material.
