3 simple words with many meanings: Cut, Hold, Pick up. 不要小看這些小而簡單的單詞!

多义词: Cut

  • To be cut out for (something) = to be fit for something = to be meant for something
  • I was cut from the team 裁掉了
  • Cut out - has a different meaning in fashion 時尚
  • To cut someone off 切斷某人?! No, 切斷聯繫!
  • Paper cut 剪紙 vs. to be cut by paper

    • 多义词: Hold

    • Hold on 稍等
    • Hold up 耽誤, or holding something up, literally
    • Hold off 等一下 = not now
    • I don't want to hold you up - Google translates to, "我不想抱你" ?!? No.
      • I don't want to hold you up = I don't want to keep you waiting = I don't want to delay you. 
    • "I was held back by____" 我被____耽誤了. hold back = 耽誤

      • 多义词: Pick up

      • "we have to pick it up" = we have to pick up the pace = we have to be faster. 
      • We got picked up. Depending on context, this phrase has different meanings. 在不同的環境中，這句話有不同的含義。
      • Delivery or pick up?
      • I'll come pick you up = 我來接你
