A podcast of survival, resilience and cultural reclamation. Amplifying Blak + Pasifika voices, women are taking back their power to rebuild and reclaim. Sharing experiences of violence within the context of colonisation, these strength centric stories are breaking silent codes.
In our sixth episode we’re yarning up with Maori woman Makareta KL. Mediumed between the worlds of her Ancestors in both Traditional and Contemporary ways, she navigates her work through her interconnections with Family, Tribe and the communities she constellates in.
A weaver of fibre, a former of clay and narrator with paint and pen, Makareta shares stories of strength and resistance, planted deeply in her cultural roots.
We acknowledge the lands on which we live and work, cared for by our traditional custodians for 80,000+ years. We move together against the continuing genocide and colonisation of our peoples. Our sovereignty was never ceded. We endow deep respect to the bloodlines of this country.

Ya'djin Women's Collective //
A sisterhood of empowered women who are informed advocates of sexual, domestic and family violence. We work collectively with our community to reclaim safe spaces and break intergenerational trauma. We share lived experiences of trauma and strengthen our knowledge. We draw from the wisdom of our matriarchs who continue to guide and advocate for our women, wreaking silence and raising the next generation of strong communities.

Breaking Silent Codes //
In August 2018, UNSW Arts and Social Sciences, Women’s Legal Service NSW and the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence sponsored and hosted a unique forum of 42 Aboriginal, Torres Strait and Pacific Islander women intended to ‘Break Silent Codes’ and share stories of cultural and spiritual responses to the issue of sexual assault and family violence in communities across Australia and the Pacific. Breaking Silent Codes has become a movement of its own for First Nations and Pasifika women.
BRISSC //
BRISSC (Brisbane Rape and Incest Survivors Support Centre) was established in 1973 and is a community-based, feminist service, operating on a collective basis. We value women’s experiences, truths, lives and skills and provide a safe, confidential and supportive environment for women who have experienced rape and incest. BRISSC believe that women are the experts of their own lives and thus it is up to them to define their needs. We seek to give women as much control over their decisions and lives as possible.

Decolonise //
Spearheaded by Wiradjuri original and creative powerhouse with an aptitude for innovation, JAJA is ablaze with the exploration of how we move forward in the continuing invasion. Working with mob across our countries to decolonise, they address the systemic racism that continues to perpetuate trauma for our peoples and lands. Truth telling is an epic part of decolonising. The system is cracking and it is up to all of us to listen deeply. It is time to evolve into what is not only possible, but necessary.
