We have a jam packed show for you today. My guests today are Tyler Pennock. Tyler is the Managing
Director of Digital Health at Burson-Marsteller, a global communications and marketing agency. He has spent most of his career creating online and social media
driven campaigns that help patients, their families and their physicians make smarter healthcare decisions. Great conversation on current tech and health.
We have Michael Semer, If you want a guy who’s been around the business of branding and the creative and strategic sides of marketing for a while, who’s seen almost all of it, of it front to back, Michael Semer is that guy. He’s led creative and branding teams for clients ranging from automakers to IT startups, working on everything from Lay’s potato chips to Coca-Cola, Microsoft Windows to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Mike’s developed corporate, product and service branding and positioning strategies, names, logos and graphics identities, social media and digital branding strategies and more for scores of companies.
Also, here on some of the apps we recommended on today’s show.
Dark Sky
Dark Sky does one thing very well: It tells you exactly when inclement weather, like rain or snow, is going to happen. The app is beautifully designed and features a precipitation timeline that lets you know minute-by-minute predictions for when you can expect rain.
Price: $3.99 (iOS)
The second is called Check. It is one a few apps that helps you budget your spending in an easy and elegant way. It’s called Check App.
Just set it up once and the app goes to work — it proactively stays on top of your bills and monitors your bank accounts and credit cards, all in one place. When bills are due or funds are low, we’ll let you know. And now even allows you to pay your bills through the app.
Price: Free
Sky Guide which is a beautiful astronomy app that works like magic.
You don’t have to know anything about astronomy to use Sky Guide. You just aim your phone or tablet at the sky and Sky Guide will highlight the constellations, stars, and planets high above you, displaying details about each. If you want to try locating things on your own, you can use the app’s built- in compass to guide you.
Price: $1.99 (iOS)
Venmo lets you pay your friends using your smartphone. It’s a great tool to have if you need to split a check or you just owe someone money. The app connects to your bank account, and the Venmo’s secure 256-bit encryption and Verisign certification means you don’t have to worry about your money getting lost in transaction.
Price: Free (iOS, Android)
Next we have two apps that virtually do the same thing. 1Password and LastPass which will make sure you never have to remember a password again.
1Password and LastPass are two competing services that remember all your passwords for you across all your computing devices. With a special browser extension, you
just have to remember one “master password” and the apps will do the rest, helping you fill in your login and password details. It’s a hassle-free way to keep all your passwords safe and secure.
1Password available on: Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android Price: $7.99 (iOS), Free (Android), $49.99 (Mac and Windows)
LastPass available for: iOS, Android, and Windows Phone Price: Free
Now for those of you that do consulting or contracting and never thought you could take credit cards. There is now Square which lets you accept credit-card payments anywhere.
The way it works is you use a small square reader that plugs into your device’s headphone port. It’s a great option for small businesses that don’t want to work directly with credit- card companies, and the service charges you 2.75% to process transactions for Visa, American Express, MasterCard and Discover.
