Hi friends, you may have noticed that these monthly episodes, which pine after vintage obsolescence by way of funk, soul, and 80s bleeps and blips, have slowly dwindled to twice-a-year installments (sorry). Basically, it's because I've been waylaid by other projects, and these mixes can take a while to curate. To be honest, Yeahyal 38 was always supposed to be the last one, since I only designed 38 album covers initially (yes, I made the covers first as a fun art project during COVID). The problem is that I have soooooooo many great tracks still queued up that never made it into mixes. Given this, I have decided to eke out enough time for at least one mix (maybe two) a year going forward, so this is not a formal goodbye, just see you in a bit. For newer listeners, I recommend you check old episodes (the benefit of these mixes is that since they consist of mostly older tracks, they have a pretty long shelf-life. For older listeners, I recommend you revisit old episodes too!) So without further ado, here's Episode 38, consisting of 53 songs FULLY MIXED.

Daniel Avery - Drone Logic

London-based DJ and producer Daniel Avery learned his craft on the dancefloor before he ever set foot in a studio. After playing bass in rock and shoegaze bands as a teenager, he moved to London, took a job handing out flyers at Fabric, and worked his way from warm-up slots to a residency there, releasing remixes under the alias Stopmakingme before switching to his own name in 2012. “Drone Logic” began as a shot in the dark. Working in a studio next door to acid house legend Andrew Weatherall, Avery made the track specifically for Weatherall’s club night, A Love From Outer Space, burned it to a CD, and nervously handed it over. Not surprisingly to me (it’s one of my favorite dance tracks), Weatherall called the next morning to say it had been the biggest track of the night. Built largely on a Korg Mono/Poly synth and drum machines fed through guitar effects pedals, “Drone Logic” is what Avery himself called techno with a shoegaze aesthetic. Over seven minutes, a squelching acid line rides a thudding, hypnotic groove while a then-unknown Kelly Lee Owens (heard on episodes 10, 14, and 27) deadpans “Noise flies high” through the haze. The debt to Underworld is obvious, but “Drone Logic” is too warped and psychedelic to feel like a simple tribute to 90s rave nostalgia than an original outgrowth from its afterglow. Feeding off all the positive response, Avery returned to his shipping-container studio overlooking the Thames to create his 2013 debut album for Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound, built around and named after the seminal track.

Bonus attention is also due to “Computer Age,” what sounds like Neil Young’s Daft Punk homage (before Daft Punk actually existed), from his 1982 album Trans. Newly signed to Geffen Records, Young’s vocoder-drenched electronic submissions baffled the label so Geffen sued him for making music “uncharacteristic” of his earlier work. The suit eventually settled, and David Geffen personally apologized. Their loss is our gain: it’s a fantastic track and far from a gimmick. Trans grew out of Young’s efforts to communicate with his young son Ben, who was born with cerebral palsy and relied on digital devices for speech. The robotic vocals capture Young’s realization of the future and his acceptance of the impending ubiquity of computer technology. Also noteworthy are two great demos, one by John Lennon and the other by Cat Stevens.

Nils Frahm - Says

Hamburg-born, Berlin-based composer Nils Frahm has made a career out of dissolving the boundary between modern classical performance and electronic sound design, building a cult following through his hybrid setups of grand pianos, analog synthesizers, vintage instruments, and tape-era outboard gear. From his 2013 live album Spaces on the Erased Tapes label, “Says” pairs a looping, arpeggiated analog synth pattern generated from his custom rig with a moody, melodic, reverb-drenched piano. The piece evolves almost entirely through gradual filter movements and subtle layering, slowly opening the harmonic spectrum over its eight-minute runtime. Recorded live, it captures not just the sound but the physical presence of the room, with Frahm shaping and automating the tones in real time.

The effect is hypnotic, somewhere between Steve Reich’s phase minimalism and the analog glow of early Tangerine Dream. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Frahm perform a few times and always leave a little stunned. His shows feel part recital, part laboratory experiment, featuring rare instruments like the glass armonica,* played by gliding wet-gloved fingers across the rims of rotating glass bowls, not unlike rubbing the tops of wine glasses. His music trades virtuoso flash (though he is an exceptionally skilled player) for something far more immersive: texture, space, and the emotional power of small sonic shifts unfolding over time. Even without the visual spectacle, “Says” builds and blooms with such dramatic force that by its final moments it’s hard not to erupt in awe as the sound reaches its towering climax.

Cleo Sol - Why Don’t You*

Gaining notoriety as a member of the enigmatic collective SAULT, London native Cleo Sol has since carved out a niche of her own, bringing a fresh, airy take to the 90s neo-soul lineage that shapes her sound. From her 2020 album Rose in the Dark, “Why Don’t You” moves with a serene sense of inevitability as Sol’s whisper-soft reassurances drift over billowing, reverb-laden piano chords and plate-saturated percussion. Produced by longtime collaborator Inflo, the track carries a faint gospel shimmer, framing vocals that feel delicately singular even as they echo Jill Scott’s emotional tenderness and Erykah Badu’s unhurried phrasing.

What makes “Why Don’t You” so distinctive is its effortless catchiness, especially considering there isn’t a proper hook or chorus to speak of. Where most tracks would make a dramatic sprint toward catharsis, Sol chooses patience, letting the song unfurl in slow motion. Only towards the end do the swelling strings and backing vocals step forward, resolving into a soft, mantra-like chant of “sometimes we fall in love… love is always in us,” before slowly and gracefully fading away.

Baxter Dury & JGrrey - Allbarone*

London-born Baxter Dury has long specialized in a peculiar strain of louche, half-sung storytelling—perfecting the art of sounding simultaneously blasé while deeply wounded, like someone narrating his own downfall with a smirk. And while the soulless UK pub chain All Bar One is usually the domain of team-building send-offs, coworker birthday rounds, and awkward blind dates, its sterile, Venti latte-adjacent cocktails make the perfect backdrop for Dury’s vision: a drunken mess slumped on the sidewalk outside, wondering how the night went sideways. Occupying space between sleaze and sophistication, somewhere on the spectrum between Serge Gainsbourg’s smoky cabaret drawl and John Cooper Clarke’s acerbic street poetry, “Allbarone,” is Baxter at his most mordant: clipped, sardonic vocals narrating brittle egos and dimly lit escapades. Paul Epworth’s lean, hypnotic production lends a disco buoyancy that contrasts Dury’s narrative detachment while JGrrey’s ghostly turn as the absent date provides the song’s catchy hook, her teasing restraint underscoring his desolate humor. “Allbarone” works as both elegy and satire: proof that All Bar One isn’t where good nights happen—it’s where they go to die.

John Carroll Kirby - Mates*

Los Angeles based keyboardist, composer, and sideman to the stars (Solange, Frank Ocean, Harry Styles, etc.), John Carroll Kirby has steadily built a reputation and vibe all his own: part tropicalia, part jazz fusion, part video game cutscene. “Mates,” from his 2023 album Blowout, feels like a walk through that world’s sun-dappled village square, where everything is oddly pleasant and nothing particularly urgent.

With soft congas weaving in and out of flute stabs and a lazily wandering synth bass line, “Mates” feels like it could easily fit as a score to a mid-’90s educational CD-ROM game; it’s upbeat, catchy and somehow endearingly kitsch. Flecks of processed vibraphone glisten at the edges, evoking both Exotica-era Martin Denny and the smoother corners of Herbie Hancock’s 1970s output. But what makes “Mates” quietly arresting is its tonal attitude—it never rushes, never insists, simply vibes with charm and winking confidence. There’s no drop, no real hook, no urgency at all, just a mellow shimmer of groove and harmony that just glides… add in a few bell-like textures and you’re somewhere between Haruomi Hosono’s Paraiso, Mac DeMarco minus all the phaser delay, and a Miami Vice deep cut remixed for massage therapy.

Suzanne Kraft - Never Heated*

Los Angeles electronic producer, DJ, and experimentalist Diego Herrera—better known as Suzanne Kraft—is known for his prodigious, eclectic dance tracks and wide-ranging collaborations. On “Never Heated,” from his 2015 debut solo album Talk From Home, Herrera channels a thoughtfully chilled-out vibe, layering sparse interjections of Wurlitzer keys and picked bass guitar over the minimalist pulse of a drum machine’s click-tempo and sporadic soft clap. Reminiscent of both Haruomi Hosono and The Durutti Column, “Never Heated” feels at once ethereal and funky, with distant vocal harmonies floating above the meandering bassline and hazy keys. But what gives it its distinctive allure is the unconventional time signature—an intriguing 8/4 structure, where the electronic clap/snare lands only on the seventh and eighth beats of every fourth measure, adding a subtle, unexpected twist to an otherwise laid-back arrangement. Rose Droll - Sleep Easy*

Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Rose Droll explores the emotional aftermath of heartbreak in “Sleep Easy,” a standout track from her second full-length album, With Strangers. Over a looped acoustic guitar and a distant, reverberating bass synth, Droll delivers a delicate yet affecting vocal performance, offering comfort to an ex-lover: “You say you’re fine and I hope you’re alright, but lately all I hear is what you croon when you cry… I remember nothing but the way we were.” As Droll’s subdued voice attempts to steer the jilted ex towards hope, the refrain—“I remember nothing but the way we were”—returns like a ghost of the past, punctuated by frenetic piano stabs that underscore the lingering pain echoing the song’s emotional core. On With Strangers, Droll proves her skill at fusing bedroom pop intimacy with electronic textures and experimental percussion. The result is a contemplative, often challenging collection that recalls the genre-defying spirit of ’90s icons like Beck and PJ Harvey.

Bonus attention is also due to Donna Summer’s powerful cover of Vangelis’s 1981 track “State of Independence.” Produced by Quincy Jones, the recording stands out not only for its bold reinterpretation, but also the star power behind its gospel-infused chorus. Jones pulled out all the stops, calling in favors from some of the biggest names in music to assemble an all-star choir that includes Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins, Patti Austin, Michael McDonald, Peggy Lipton, and even actress Dyan Cannon.

Royal Otis - Oysters in My Pocket*

New South Wales group, Royal Otis developed a small following when their early 2022 Bar n Grill EP cleverly combined jangly, indie and psychedelic rock on tracks like the catchy Oysters in My Pocket. Leveraging techniques used by many great current Aussie bands, Royal Otis adeptly blend 60s surf rock with 80s new wave to create music embedded with an instantaneous neo-nostalgia. The duo, consisting of Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic, saw even greater commercial appeal when their cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’, gained popularity in Emerald Fennell’s dark comedy Saltburn. Channeling bands like New Order and Violent Femmes, “Oysters in My Pocket” relies on the chant-like singing and frenetic strumming of both lads as they pine away for lazy summer days, slurping up salty mollusks.

Talaboman - Dins El Llit (Superpitcher Remix)*

Dins El Llit is an incredible auditory journey created by the deep-house minimalist super group, Talaboman (consisting of electronic masters, John Talabot of Barcelona and Axel Bowman of Stockholm). To add to the supergroup aspect, this version is remixed by Superpitcher, a German producer who happens to be a member of Pachanga Boys (another electronic supergroup featured previously on Yeahyal 25 as the highlighted track). Dins El Llit leads with a delayed bongo tap over a pulsating 909 kick that slowly builds with more and more rhythmic features, (clicking sticks, hi hats, shakers and delayed voices mumbling indecipherably) until finally pulsating blips and bells carry an ethereal melody onward towards Vangelis-like synth pads. The tune simmers as it slowly builds but never climaxes, only slowly returning to the calming, reverberated chimes where it begins.

Sneaks - Look Like That*

Washington, DC multi-instrumentalist/producer/poet Eva Moolchan, aka Sneaks, is a minimalist post-punk artist known for witty blends of chants and spoken-word vocals over beds of lo-fi bass, drum machines, and minimal keyboards. On It’s a Myth, the 2017 album on Merge Records, Sneaks offers her longest track (weighing in at a whopping three minutes and fifteen seconds), “Look Like That.” Staying true to form Moolchan offers up a catchy monotone refrain, “What do they look like? They look like that, they look like that” over a pulsating bass synth and snappy 80’s drum break; it’s elegant in its simplicity and hard not to nod your head and sway (at very least).
