One of the things I'm constantly reassuring my clients about is the truth that however ugly or dark their past might be, there is always the choice and opportunity to create a future for themselves that is not mired in the pain of abuse.

This means actively seeking the light in order to "create beauty out of the ugliness". It also means re-parenting your inner child to bring them out of the darkness.
