In 1995, the newly elected Ontario government led by premier Mike Harris found itself embroiled in a full-blown crisis. Indigenous protesters were locked in a confrontation with the OPP at Ipperwash Provincial Park in southwestern Ontario. By the time the dust had settled, a demonstrator named Dudley George had been shot and killed, by an OPP officer who was eventually charged with criminal negligence causing death.
