Understanding Yellow in Color MagicIt’s the color of illumination—both literal and metaphorical. Yellow wakes up the mind, sparks inspiration, and helps us “brighten” pathways toward change.

Yellow is associated with:

• The Sun and solar deities

• The element of Air

• The solar plexus chakra

• Clarity, intellect, memory, mental processes

• Prosperity, creativity, self-promotion, authority

• Hope, optimism, dawn, beginnings, possibility

If you want to honor yellow specifically, you might work more intentionally with it on Sundays: wear yellow, light a gold or yellow candle, or spend time in literal sunlight (or imagining it, if you live somewhere cloudy and rainy).

Tarot, Symbolism, and the Power of Yellow

Yellow is everywhere in the tarot. In the Rider–Waite–Smith system, many backgrounds are intentionally painted yellow to communicate optimism, warmth, clarity, and potential. This color creates an atmosphere where insight feels accessible. It communicates, “Something is opening. Something is possible.”

Notable yellow-rich cards include:

• The Sun - joy, vitality, illumination, growth

• The Fool - beginner’s mind, openness, hope, fresh possibility

• The Magician - confidence, self-actualization, creative power

• Queen of Wands - charisma, warmth, visibility, inner fire

• Many Wands cards - spark, movement, desire, creative ignition

In decks like The Herbcrafter’s Tarot, yellow plants like St. John’s Wort or dandelion show up to mirror the healing, solar, and uplifting qualities of the color.

Even the earth-element suit of Pentacles sometimes leans toward yellow— like coins, gold tones, grounded prosperity, warmth, and physical vitality.
