Yellowjackets wtf?

Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson have said from the start that Yellowjackets was partly inspired by Lord of the Flies, the tale of a bunch of young schoolboys stranded on an island after a plane crash, and how they managed. And now we have a brilliantly beautiful and disturbing new four-episode adaptation by the BBC (on Netflix in the U.S.), and so Kasi, Kara, and Jason are here to talk it through. Plus, we catch you up on some YJ news that’s happened since we last podcasted. For one thing, they’ve announced the final season will premiere on Friday, November 20! Buzz! Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!

Mentioned:

Next up: Wendy, Daphne, Penny, and Jason will mostly likely be back at some point with a YJ catch-up episode, or if not that, then definitely for Yellowjackets S4E1(!). In the mean time, if you’d like to write in and connect:

Yellowjackets season 4 is still probably at least a year away, but we think the movie Send Help, in theaters now, is a great temporary fix. It’s about a supremely skilled woman who gets overlooked and mistreated by her douchebag of a boss, and then after a plane crash they get stranded on an island where the tables are turned. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, we totally recommend it - it’s wild, and fun, and pretty gruesome, much like a certain show we all love. Join Wendy, Jason, and special guest Karen as we talk it out!

Next up: We’ll be back with another episode at some point, probably either on the BBC Lord of the Flies series, or Yellowjackets S4E1(!). In the mean time, if you’d like to write in and connect:

Hey all, here’s another bonus episode, this time on the crazy new Apple TV show, Pluribus.

Pluribus is the latest show from Breaking Bad creator, Vince Gilligan, who in our book is one of the all-time great TV creators. His writing is intelligent, meticulous, unexpected, and wry, and this show is wild. It’s very Twilight Zone-y. Creepy, thought provoking, thrilling, extremely odd in the best way, and super fun.

If you haven’t tried it, we definitely recommend you give it a shot! And then, of course, listen to this podcast. And if you end up getting subsumed into the collective, we’ll be covering the rest of the season on Wax Episodic, available wherever you get podcasts, or at waxepisodic.com.

PS If you’ve been a Podcastica listener for awhile, you might be interested know that the hosts for this podcast are me (Jason) and Karen, who started this network 15 years ago with The Walking Dead ‘Cast. So much fun podcasting with Karen again!

Bonus Episode: Introducing Wax Episodic

Hi, Jason here. This is a special bonus episode reposted from my new podcast, Wax Episodic, where I cover top-tier, story-rich TV shows one season at a time with different co-hosts.

We’re kicking things off with Alien: Earth, and I wanted to share the first episode here so you can check it out. If you like it, please consider subscribing to Wax Episodic — it’s my new podcast home, and you can find it at waxepisodic.com.

PS If you appreciate how Yellowjackets doesn’t pull any punches — intense, unsettling, and sometimes darkly funny — you might vibe with Alien: Earth, which brings that same no-holds-barred energy to the sci-fi horror space.

Alien: Earth S1E1&2: “Neverland” & “Mr. October”

The wait is over — Alien: Earth has landed, and Noah Hawley’s first two episodes deliver everything we hoped for: suspense, grotesque alien terrors, strange new lifeforms, and a sharp look at how unchecked corporate ambition could shape our future — in a series that (at least so far) feels both classic and brand new. Join Jason, Randy, and Kara as we dig into “Neverland” and “Mr. October.”

Hey we thought we’d drop in and do an episode since it’s been awhile. We’re finally getting around to covering the 2023 survival drama Society of the Snow about the Uruguayan rugby team that crashed in the Andes back in 1972 (and we’re thrilled to have Kasi and Maria joining us to talk about it). We’ll just say, it’s an incredible movie, and we think any YJ fan is going to love it - so if you haven’t seen it, we recommend you watch it now (it’s on Netflix) and then come back and check out the podcast. Buzz buzz buzz!

We’ll be back with another episode at some point. In the mean time, if you’d like to write in and connect:

Wow, that was unexpected. I don’t want to give too much away because sometimes people read the show notes before watching the episode and then get mad at us for spoiling things, but I can’t believe Travis was the Antler Queen!!!!
