The Yet Podcast:
helping writers quiet the doubt and write the book

Yet 41 - Give Yourself Permission to Try with author Wendy Haller

Listen Later

Daunting, exciting, and scary.

That’s how author Wendy Haller described the transition to being an author. She spent 19 years as a special education preschool teacher before having to step away for medical reasons.

After a month of grieving over having to leave her profession, she started writing.

She had always written poetry - what she calls her “poetic memoirs,” but she only shared it with immediate family for the longest time. But before her son went away to college, she made him a promise that she would focus on writing.

After stepping away from the classroom, Wendy decided she’d bring this promise to fruition. She always dreamed of being a writer but never had the confidence in herself. In her words “it’s very vulnerable” to put yourself out there.

When she published her poetry book, she wanted to keep it quiet, only sharing the link with immediate family. Her brother, though, put it on Facebook, proud of his little sister, the published author.

Even though this wasn’t what Wendy wanted, she describes it as a blessing - he had ripped the band aid off, and now it was out in the open.

Something that had been dormant in her for years had come to life. She wrote two children’s books, and started her first novel. Since she’d only done poetry and children’s books, the novel presented a new challenge for her.

She gave herself permission to let go of the doubt, and her creativity exploded.

I hope you’re half as inspired by Wendy’s story as I have been.
