This episode we go over the appeal and history of isekai aka trapped in another world anime such as Sword Art Online, Re:Zero, Log Horizon, Reincarnated as a Slime, and Mushoku Tensei. We go over what defines an isekai, what shows are isekai-adjacent but not quite isekai, and the history of isekai from the 1960s through present day, touching on the changes in the genre in style and content, particularly with SAO's massive influence on isekai post 2012, partly sparked by Dragon Quest and JRPGs and by Japan's economic downturn.
