In Episode 5 of Yoga Is a Practice, Not a Performance, we explore the relationship between yoga, social media, ego, identity, and authenticity. What happens when being a yoga teacher or practitioner becomes part of our identity, and how do we keep confidence from becoming ego or arrogance? We discuss the pressure to promote ourselves online, the difference between being a yoga teacher and a yoga influencer, and how social media can both support and distort the way yoga is practiced, taught, and perceived. We also explore the importance of sangha and in-person community, why popularity and prestige don’t necessarily make someone a trustworthy source of yoga information, and the question: if nobody ever saw your yoga practice, would you still practice? Ultimately, social media is a tool—but how we use it matters. We finish with a challenge to put the phone away, practice without an audience, and notice what happens when we create more space for presence, self-awareness, and connection.
