19th Sutra Chapter 2

The stages of the gunas of nature are specific, nonspecific, defined, and undifferentiated.

Sutra 2.17 had stated that the cause of our pain is the confusion of the Seer and the seen, implying that we cannot always discern the difference between the two.

We will examine and understand Prakriti’s evolution from the unmanifest to the manifest, from the subtle to the gross.

विशेषाविशेषलिङ्गमात्रालिङ्गानि गुणपर्वाणि

* vishesha - specific, diversified

* avishesha - nonspecific, undiversified

* lingga-matra- defined, indicated, marked

* alinggani - undifferentiated, without marks, sign less

* gunna - gunas(qualities)

* parvani - state.

विशेष , अविशेष , लिङ्गमात्र , अलिङ्गानि , गुण , पर्वाणि ॥

• लिङ्गमात्र - लिंगमात्र (और)

• अलिङ्गानि - अलिंग - (ये चार)

• गुण - सत्त्वादि गुणों के

• पर्वाणि - भेद अर्थात् अवस्थाएँ हैं ।

 

विशेष, अविशेष, लिंगमात्र और अलिंग - ये चार सत्त्वादि गुणों के भेद अर्थात् अवस्थाएँ हैं ।
