While pervading nearly every aspect of our modern lives, software code remains a mysterious, arcane form of magic.  To many of us, the marvels created out of rearranged electrons summoned up by a few lines of text in an obscure language seem more akin to the incantations of wizards than they do the product of science. Part of coding’s mystery is that there have been few histories of the craft written for a general audience.  Slate technology editor Torie Bosch sought to correct that omission with her latest book, “You Are Not Expected to Understand This” out now from Princeton University Press.
