Today we’re updating you on: the political situation in Mali, a new terminal in Lagos, and Amazon's headquarters in South Africa.

While recording the podcast we were unsure about whether Nigeria had actually recognised Taiwan as an independent country (6:30). We can now confirm that no, Nigeria has not recognised Taiwan as an independent country. Nigeria has never even established official diplomatic ties with Taiwan. In 2017, Nigeria’s foreign minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, said, “We recognise the People’s Republic of China, the one-China Policy.” And shortly after, Nigeria ordered Taiwan to close down its unofficial embassy (or “trade mission”) in Abuja.
