The heresy known as Marcionism is based on the belief that the character and teachings of Jesus do not fit with the God of the Old Testament. If wrath, anger, and ruthlessness are evident in the actions of God in the Old Testament, surely this God cannot be the same as Jesus, who lived and spoke of love, kindness and mercy?
