Mind Spectrum

You Know It’s Fake. It Still Works.

Listen Later

You buy a pill that literally says “PLACEBO” on the label. You pay for it. You swallow it. You KNOW it’s sugar.

And then your memory gets better.

A new study from Italy (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, published June 2026 in the International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology) gave 90 healthy adults over 60 either no treatment, a deceptive placebo, or an open-label placebo — where they were explicitly told: “This is a placebo. It contains no active ingredient.”

Both placebo groups improved memory, physical performance, and stress levels. The group that KNEW they were taking fake pills actually improved MORE on some measures.

Your brain can be hacked by nothing — as long as you believe the nothing.

In this episode: the science of open-label placebos, why your expectation system is more powerful than any pill, and how “honest medicine” might be the future of low-cost, zero-side-effect interventions.
