The reason it's important to destroy the old to become the new is the fact that. If the old was serving you the way you wanted it to then you would be where you want to be right now. Don't get me wrong the things we go through help us grow but we have to evolve to get to where we want to be. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is a sign of insanity.
