  • Sermon on the Mount Part 2: Those Who Mourn

Part 2 picks up halfway through Matthew 5:4, right where last week ran out of time: blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Last week was mourning over our own sin and over a lost world. This week is the grief everybody knows, losing someone you love. Gina talks about Pop, the grandfather who started their family's faith. Troy remembers calling his mom the morning after nights that could have gone very differently and asking what she was doing at 2:30. Her answer was always the same: God woke me up, and I was praying for you.

Then Gina digs into the word comforted. It means more than sympathy. It means to be called alongside. Troy tells about the first night he was allowed to leave Set Free, when he came to Gina's women's conference to help in the kitchen and couldn't stop crying once the worship started. It looked like mourning. It was God putting him back together. It ends full circle, with a brother and sister who have both been broken now helping other people find their comfort.

Scripture in this episode: Matthew 5:4, Genesis 32:26, Revelation 21:4, Lamentations 3:22-23.

If you're in a mourning season, there's hope, and comfort is coming. Send us a message if we can pray with you, and follow the show so you don't miss what's next in the series.

  • Sermon on the mount : Recognizing our need for God

Gina is starting something new with her brother Troy: a slow walk through the Sermon on the Mount. It's a study the Lord laid on her heart at the beginning of the year. Troy got two days' notice.

They open in Matthew 5 and take the Beatitudes one half-verse at a time. Blessed are the poor in spirit means recognizing how much you need God, and Troy holds it up against the opposite, a pride he calls being high in spirit. He's honest that pride is one of his biggest fears. They talk about people who are saved but spiritually bankrupt because they never talk to Him, the only part any of us played in our own salvation, and a story Gina heard Brother David Gibbs tell about a widow and the last $20,000 she had.

Then they start on blessed are they that mourn. Mourning over our own sin. David's steady repentance. Grieving over a lost world, and the family members we've gotten used to praying one quick line for. They make it halfway through the verse before time runs out.

Part 2 picks up next Monday.

Scripture in this episode: Matthew 5:1-4, Hebrews 4:16, 2 Samuel 12.

  • Fear Ends Here

Charity sits down with Gina to talk about something a lot of people are fighting and very few admit to: fear and anxiety.

It started when she was eight or nine. Nightmares, dread out of nowhere, and a mom who heard the Holy Spirit say Psalm 91. They read it together every night until the fear was gone. Years later it came back as panic attacks, bad enough that she blacked out at a work lunch. Charity is careful and clear that there's no shame in medication or in getting help. She also talks about the night she realized she didn't think she could sleep without a pill, and what came next: prayer, a Christian counselor, and people who taught her to fight with the Word.

Together they talk about where the church has missed it, why Charity won't say my anxiety, what she texts a friend on a hard day, and the afternoon years later when the fear came back and she had to decide which way to walk.

Scripture in this episode: Psalm 91, 2 Timothy 1:7, John 14:26-27, Psalm 34:4.

If you're in a battle today, you're not the only one. Send us a message and we'll pray with you. Follow the show so you don't miss next Monday.

  • Teaching a gift that comes from God

Gina taught school for ten years, so this conversation is close to home. A few weeks into the school year, she sits down with April, an assistant principal at a Christian academy, to talk about the people we forget to pray for.

The honeymoon season is over. Attitudes are coming out, the drama never takes a break, and teachers are carrying curriculum, testing and a classroom full of kids who bring their home lives in the door with them. April says something that stops Gina in her tracks: some of these children have nobody praying for them, and their teacher may be the only person bringing them to the throne room.

April is honest about the season she gave everything to other people's children and had nothing left for her own, and about the voice in 2 Corinthians 12 that kept telling her she wasn't good enough. Gina tells about a fifth grader, a homework pad, and the question the Holy Spirit nudged her to ask.

    Scripture in this episode: 1 Peter 5:8, 2 Corinthians 12:7-9, James 1:5, John 3:30.

If you love a teacher, send this to them, and then pray for them by name. Follow the show so you don't miss next Monday.

  • The Real Thing Part II

Emma brought this subject to Gina, and Gina came back with numbers. Somewhere between 89 and 93 percent of young people and social media users regularly compare themselves to other people. About 12 percent of everyday human thought is some form of comparison. The average teenage girl spends two to three hours a day making a post worth posting.
We say comparison is the thief of joy. Gina's argument is that it does not stop there. It takes your sense of worth with it, and then it takes the motivation to do the thing God actually put in front of you.
They work through the two places it hits hardest, appearance and social media, then go to scripture for the pattern. Israel demanding a king so they could be like the other nations. Abraham getting impatient four chapters short of the promise. Emma's picture is the one that sticks: if we all got everything on the same schedule, life would read like a Hallmark movie, and He took the time to write all of our stories separately.
Scripture in this episode: 1 Samuel 8:4-9 and 18-20, Galatians 1:10, Genesis 17 and 21.
If you are stuck in the comparison loop right now, this one is for you. Share it with a friend and follow the show.

  • The Real Thing Part I

Last week Gina asked her brother what it means to be the real thing. This week she asks somebody thirty years younger.

Emma is twenty, studying to be a mental health counselor, subbing at the elementary school and coaching middle school cheer. Her answer starts somewhere Troy's did not: be honest about where you actually are, instead of performing the season you wish you were in.

From there they get into the pressure young adults carry to have it all mapped out, why vulnerability is the proof of the thing, and the difference between loving someone and liking them. Gina tells about a part of her testimony she is not proud of and the day the Holy Spirit made her share it with a woman sitting on her couch. Emma has a word for the older women listening about what it feels like when the adults act like they have it all together.

Last week is the same question asked thirty years earlier.

Scripture in this episode: Psalm 119:105, 2 Corinthians 10:5 with Philippians 4:8, Matthew 28:19-20.

  • Power Belongs to God Part II

Somebody left a comment that said thank you for being the real thing, and Gina could not let the word go. So she and her brother Troy take it apart. What actually makes a person real, and what only looks real from the outside.
Troy starts where he always starts, at Set Free, watching men copy him instead of asking God who they were made to be, then burn out and leave. From there they build the list. Honesty. Repentance that comes with humility. Loving people you do not agree with, which includes deleting the post instead of sending it. Forgiving someone you did not know you were holding onto.
Troy also confesses what he got wrong about tithing, and tells the story of his wife's giveaway ministry and the church family whose trailer burned. It ends on a question neither of them softens: are we the real church, and if we are, where is it?
Next week Gina asks a twenty year old the same question.
Scripture in this episode: 1 Samuel 16:7, Matthew 22:37-39, Matthew 6:14-15.

  • Power Belongs to God

Gina texted her brother Troy one verse and it turned into this whole conversation. Psalm 62:11 says God hath spoken once, twice have I heard this, that power belongeth unto God. So her question is simple, and it is not comfortable: if the power is already His, why do we keep handing ours to everybody else?
They work through the honest answers. Fear of what He might ask us to give up. Impatience, because people answer today and God often does not. The habit of taking a promise the way we want it instead of the way He meant it, which Troy admits cost him years. Gina talks about starting a fast with one request in mind and hearing God tell her to put it down and just get closer.
The conversation keeps circling back to one thing. Most of us never take anything to God because we have no prayer life at all. Gina is honest about the years she spent at church every time the doors were open, teaching Sunday school, singing, serving, and never once actually talking to Him.
Scripture in this episode: Psalm 62:11, 1 Samuel 30:8, Philippians 4:7.

  • Grace to Grace Part II

This is the part where God gives it back.

Troy walked into Set Free with one bag of clothes and a pillow, and the staff spent two months waiting on him to leave. Nobody with a family that loves them ever stays. He stayed.

It was a converted eleven-room motel in Yulee. They put him in room five with five other men, and inside the first hour he knew God had picked the room. Two weeks later COVID hit and visitation disappeared. At the end of the five-month program, with a war going on inside him about whether to go, God handed him Joshua 1: you've found your rest, now stay until your men find theirs. So he stayed on as an overseer.

Then came the night he finally said take all of it, do what You want to do with me. Troy says the peace that hit him was stronger than anything he felt the day he got saved. He's honest that the hard part of surrender is never the stuff you want to hand over. It's the stuff you want to keep control of.

From there he walks through what God gave back. A wife, Hillary. Children he never expected at this stage of his life, including a daughter named Liberty Ray, because where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. A promise God gave him by a tree at Set Free, straight out of Joel 2. And a couple at church who couldn't sell their house for two years and couldn't figure out why, until the day they handed it to Troy's family along with a car.

Five years to the week after Gina dropped him off, he preached his first message in thirty years.

"I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten." Joel 2:25

    In this episode:

(11:52) A peace hit me stronger than anything I got when I got saved

(16:33) I said out loud, this is all you're ever going to be

(26:56) Hold on. God just confirmed it. We want to give you our house

(33:52) He'd give me grace, and I'd spit on it. And He'd come with more

One heads up before you press play: this conversation names addiction, depression and suicidal thinking directly. If you're sitting in that right now, please tell somebody you trust. Troy's story is proof the ending isn't written yet.

Haven't heard Part 1 yet? Go back and start there. This one hits different once you know where he came from.

  • Grace to Grace Part I

He swore he'd never touch it. Then he woke up one day smack in the middle of it.

This week Gina sits down with her oldest brother Troy for the half of the story where, as she puts it, the enemy thought he had won.

Troy got saved at Lawtey during a real revival. He surrendered to preach six months later and went off to Bible college. And then he slipped away quietly, still showing up to church the entire time, because his relationship with God had never gone past the surface. He says he could preach thirty minutes on Isaiah 43 and never have lived a line of it. So when the revival ended, he had nothing to stand on.

Divorce, isolation and depression pushed him toward the one drug that made him feel anything positive, and then toward suicidal thinking.

Gina tells her side too, and it's the part a lot of families will recognize. The day she and Ronnie broke a window because she was sure she'd find him dead. The counselor who gave her a sentence she didn't want to hear: you're the problem, your family is enabling him, and you are not God. Her flesh rose up at that. Then the Holy Spirit asked which one she was going to cater to, her pride or the truth.

And then there's the prayer she carried quietly for years and never expected to say out loud.

It ends with Troy dropping everything he owned into a dumpster and walking into Set Free with one bag of clothes and a pillow.

"Old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17

    In this episode:

(02:44) I swore I'd never do that. Then I woke up smack in the middle of it

    (07:56) I was a surface-level Christian my whole life

(20:22) You want the truth? You're the problem. You're not God

(22:16) I prayed, God, whatever it takes

One heads up before you press play: this conversation names addiction, depression and suicidal thinking directly. If you're sitting in that right now, please tell somebody you trust. Troy's story is proof the ending isn't written yet.
