You Will Not Always Have Me

Listen Later

In Pilgrim’s Progress, the author, John Bunyan, presents several metaphorical crossroads for his main character, named Christian. Each fork in the road demands a decisive choice while on the journey to the Celestial City. The “right paths” are not very enticing; they’re narrow, steep, costly, and full of danger. While the “wrong paths” seem better and easier, their dangers are almost always fatal. Both kinds of paths carry a cost, but only one way leads to life and the city.
This Sunday, we will look through Mark 14:1-11 and see a similar crossroads imagery. One woman chooses Jesus, while the others cling to other temporal, less important things. But there are only two options when it comes to Jesus: it’s all and only Jesus, or none of him. It’s devotion or denial. So, either you treasure Jesus above all, or you don’t. Either you desire him more than anything, or you don’t. Either you worship him fully, or you don’t. Either you trust him, and follow him, and serve him completely, or you don’t. There are no in-betweens for us to dwell in. And we must choose wisely, because only Jesus leads to life.
