Young Australians face rising bowel cancer rates

Bowel cancer has become Australia's deadliest cancer for people aged 25 to 54, with nearly 2,000 new diagnoses annually—a 200% increase over the past 20 years. Queensland researchers are investigating whether modern diets, particularly ultra-processed foods, junk foods, and environmental toxins, are altering the gut microbiome and triggering inflammation that increases cancer risk. The research team is also exploring whether drugs or compounds that reduce gut inflammation could help prevent bowel cancer in the future.
