Romans 12:1-2 – Our church held a joint service with Milwaukie Covenant Church this past Sunday. Jon taught on a biblical viewpoint of body image. Romans talks about offering our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This both an acceptance of our original set apartness and pleasingness to God introduced in Genesis 1, and a discipline to remain in this way in light of a broken and unjust world. Looking at the story of Jacob, Esau, Leah and Rachel in Genesis 29 Jon follows early biblical commentary on body image, projection, and manipulation that began with the fig leaves in the Garden of Eden, and continues as Jacob pretends to be Esau, and Leah pretends to be Rachel. As we are tempted to desire different bodies, and pretend to be that which we have not been given by God, we have a choice – we can relive the pain and heartache in this story – or be transformed by the renewal of our mind through God's incredible mercy to us, and seek wholeness through our beloved acceptance in Christ.
