Childhood trauma doesn't just fade with time—it embeds itself in our bodies, creating physical dysfunction that can eventually threaten our lives. In this vulnerable conversation, sexual abuse survivor Melonie Packer reveals how the rape she experienced at age 5 and ongoing abuse from her grandfather manifested decades later as chronic illness, hormonal dysfunction, and debilitating fatigue.
"The constant, chronic PTSD affects your hypothalamus and your pituitary and pineal glands, which messes up all your hormones," Melonie explains. "You need to treat trauma like it's cancer." This powerful metaphor frames her journey through various healing modalities, from traditional therapy to plant medicine ceremonies and physical detoxification.
What makes Melonie's story particularly illuminating is her discovery of the connection between emotional and physical cleansing. As she worked through trauma release, she noticed how parasites in the body seemed to mirror emotional parasites from her past. "When we're emotionally stressed, especially chronically, the parasites come in and feed off that low energy—just like squash bugs attack a stressed plant."
The conversation also explores the complex family dynamics surrounding childhood trauma. Melonie shares how setting boundaries with her narcissistic mother and navigating a 20-year marriage while processing dissociative identity disorder became essential parts of her healing journey. Through it all, she learned that genuine healing requires addressing trauma on multiple levels—physical, emotional, spiritual, and relational.
