Hardware:

* Get rid of old hardware lying around the house or your business. Check with the BBB to see if there’s an upcoming shred day event that also includes destruction of electronic equipment and digital files as well. * Your old hardware will still contain files, such as pictures, browsing history, old business files, etc. You can use a hammer to destroy and old drive but that really just slows down someone who really wants to get access to the drive. You really need to find a shredder that will completely destroy your old drives. According to the BBB, there should be another one in the US in October, 2020.

Software:

* Manage your online passwords. Check out last week's episode for more details here https://www.heathermonthie.com/manageyourpasswords/* Update your software. You want to make sure you have the latest security updates.* Computer/phone/tablet operating system* Your web browser* Any apps you use on your phone, computer, ipad, chromebook* Make backups* Backups for your business data. 3-2-1 backup method as suggested by the BBB. You should have 3 backups, 2 should be on a different media, and 1 should be offline and offsite in another geographical area. * Delete old software and apps that you’re no longer using.* Clean out old email you don’t need anymore.* Unsubscribe from email newsletters you don’t read anymore.* Clear out old files on your computer, such as your recycle bin, temporary files

Manage your online presence:

* Review your privacy and security settings on your personal and business social media accounts.* Set up a Google Alert for your name, your spouse's name, your kid’s names, your business names, your phone number, and your home and business address. https://www.google.com/alerts* Review your policies about what type of content can and should be shared on social media. This goes for your business and your family!* Next week’s episode is all about how to create a professional online presence for yourself and/or your business.
