Society bills maternal instincts as a sort of magical knowing that all moms have that tells them the right thing to do in any situation. 

 

So when moms feel confused or conflicted or don’t know what to do, it feels like something has gone wrong.  Like their maternal instincts have let them down.  Or they probably suck.
