Your New Job. Your Crucial First 90 Days. Part 3

Listen Later

Welcome to part 3 of our exploration, with Rob Cooper, of the first 90 days in a new role.

So now you’re into the third phase of your new role. You have done your initial analysis of the organisation, your stakeholders, customers, suppliers and the wider community. You have started to create some expectations of your team and colleague and identified some quick wins to show you can deliver.

Working with Rob as a coach, you would also have had the opportunity to face up to your own level of imposter syndrome, and will have explored mitigations to the various challenges to your personal and professional confidence. You will also have had the chance to discuss with Rob specific examples of challenges and successes you have experienced, with a view to building on success, adapting to the world as you are discovering it, and building resilience for the future.

In this pod, Rob explores these four key areas:

Refinement and Adjustment

  • How to determine well your initial initiatives - your quicker wins - are going. How might you need to adjust your style to become even more effective?

Longer-Term Strategy

  • How you can build on that for the longer-term - generally 12-24 months - and how you make these plans visible to stakeholders.
  • What does a ‘longer-term mindset’ look like, and what might the switch to this involved if you have been more used to meeting shorter-term demands and priorities?
  • How can you work with a coach to explore the concept of “Now your responsibility is to deliver through others”?
  • How do you value what you do now, and how does this differ from how you evaluated yourself in a previous role?
  • The value of transition coaching to enable you to meet these challenges.

Continued Learning

  • Around what areas do you need to continued top learn? Have you discovered a technical gap in your knowledge, do you need to broaden or deepen your leadership skills or develop you emotional intelligence?
  • In a commercial environment, what market information do you need? What are other organisations doing, such as in cutting edge technologies such as AI, that you need to get up to speed with?

Performance review

  • How you establish yourself as a team leader. This can be a challenging time if there is any gap between the skills available in your team and what the organisation needs for longer-term strategic delivery. Do some of your people need to move on?
  • How might your application of the Radical Candor Framework, explored in the last podcast, serve you here?

And as we think about the ongoing value of coaching after this first 90 day period, gain some more personal insights into Rob, how he works, and how in the light of these podcasts you can see the value of an ongoing working relationship with Rob as you establish yourself in a new role.
