I sit down with two of PS 290's own — Yinet and Gabby, counselors and leaders with Maspeth Town Hall. Both found their way to this work through unexpected opportunities, and both chose to lean in fully. Yinet began as a counselor at just 17 years old and has grown into a director role over nearly a decade. Gabby came in through a family connection and found her footing by also serving as a paraprofessional during the school day.
Together, they reflect on what it means to truly belong to a community — not just work in it. From greeting families at the door to running into parents on the block, Annette and Gabby share how relationships, communication, and genuine care are at the heart of everything they do. They also give us a sneak peek at something exciting: new clubs coming soon for scholars in the Town Hall program.
