Margaret "Meggy" Shane is a studious yet sensitive loner. She is viewed as a misfit amongst some people in her homeroom and comes off as a person who would much rather be alone. When a schoolwide trip causes her to break down and make her feel insecure, she is rescued by someone who tries to show her that words of other people don't matter.
