Our guest is a retired Navy Reserve Captain and a Los Angeles-based 737 Captain for United airlines. You can say flying is in his DNA in that he was born into an Air Force family. After graduating with honors from University of Kansas, he joined the U.S. Navy and flew as a Naval Flight Officer, and later transitioned to become a Naval Aviator (pilot).
He flew combat missions in Bosnia-Hercegovina and Afghanistan, the Far East, Middle East, and the Mediterranean Sea. He has numerous personal awards for his service, including the Bronze Star Medal, Strike Air Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals. But, surprisingly, it was becoming a pilot for United Airlines that proved to be a major hurdle. Here to share his story of perseverance, is Captain Jim "Bluto" Allen
