Mark Twain wrote a story about a prince and a pauper who looked exactly the same. They used this fact to exchange lives for a time. As the story plays out, there are many moments of tension because one person is impersonating another and doesn’t have the history or experience of the person they are pretending to be. The pauper finds the responsibilities of the prince to be overwhelming, even though the life he experiences is privileged. If you were to try to pretend to be someone else, it probably wouldn’t take long for someone who knows that other person to recognize that you are not them. For believers, we walk through this world knowing that we want people to see Jesus. But sometimes, what happens in debatable matters is that we revert to our humanity and try to make people see what we think they need. We do this in spite of the fact that God’s Word and our own experience is clear: transformation does not happen by the skill or will of man. It is something only God’s Spirit can do in people. What would it look like if we left the Spirit’s work to the Spirit?
