You’re Not the Holy Spirit

Listen Later

Mark Twain wrote a story about a prince and a pauper who looked exactly

the same. They used this fact to exchange lives for a time. As the
story plays out, there are many moments of tension because one person is
impersonating another and doesn’t have the history or experience of the
person they are pretending to be. The pauper finds the
responsibilities of the prince to be overwhelming, even though the life
he experiences is privileged. If you were to try to pretend to be
someone else, it probably wouldn’t take long for someone who knows that
other person to recognize that you are not them. For believers, we walk
through this world knowing that we want people to see Jesus. But
sometimes, what happens in debatable matters is that we revert to our
humanity and try to make people see what we think they need. We do this
in spite of the fact that God’s Word and our own experience is clear:
transformation does not happen by the skill or will of man. It is
something only God’s Spirit can do in people. What would it look like
if we left the Spirit’s work to the Spirit?
