Youth TakeOver: G20, mental health and addressing unemployment

Listen Later

South Africa is preparing to host the G20 Summit on the 22 to 23 November 2025. The focus is on fair global financing, jobs, climate, and technology. But what does it mean for me as you and me, as South Africans?

How can G20 Presidency give us the platform to tackle youth unemployment here in South Africa?

Yes, we’ve seen the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) helping over 2 million young people find work as teacher assistants in schools. President Ramaphosa calls it a world-class, corruption-free programme. However, unemployment continues to rise among young people. The expanded unemployment rate currently stands at 41.9% and includes people who have stopped actively looking for jobs.

The G20 can address youth unemployment and underemployment challenges by focusing on policies that promote skills development, job creation, and social protection.
