Youtube Restricts LGBT+ Content (2017) discussion

Youtube's Restricted Mode is intended to shield children from objectionable material, like sex, drug use, and graphic violence. Unfortunately it also restricted hundreds of thousands of innocuous LGBT-related videos. The company came under fire when queer YouTubers complained that their family-friendly videos were being blocked, including content like wedding videos that had no mention of sex. Further investigation found that the filters seemed geared specifically to LGBT content, but specifically hetero content was spared. After countless complaints, the Google-owned company released a blog post saying the issue has been resolved. We discuss to possible causes of such errors and the ramifications of continued attempts to filter out content belonging to individuals or groups based on certain attributes like gender, gender identity, political viewpoints, race, religion or sexual orientation.
